Minister less than impressed by Mankweng police station upgrade delays

Public Works Minister Thula Nxesi recently did a quality inspection of the Mankweng Police Station, which is currently being renovated and upgraded.

POLOKWANE – During his visit, the minister spoke of the talks they have been having with the regional office in the province in terms of the project.
He was, however, less than impressed with the duration of the project, since it is way behind schedule by 17 months.

The project is aimed to upgrade the existing police station, including a project five star, with civil infrastructure and electrical installations which will include the security system, additional offices, living quarters and number of cells.

He said that on the positive side the employment target for local labour has been met as 106 local people have been employed, as well as 19 specialised labourers brought by SAPS contractors.

Col Botha, Head of Support at the Mankweng Police Station, said the purpose of renovating the police station was to be able to serve the community of Mankweng and the surrounding areas.

“The first police station was built in 1969 so it was old and no longer served the community as large as Mankweng, and upgrading the old structure will help adapt to the new conditions including population demands, the level of crime that needs to be attend to and give the community a sense of safety,” she said.
