[UPDATE] The N1 is now open following horror crash

The accident occurred when the front right tyre of a truck burst causing it to hit oncoming traffic.

POLOKWANE – The Department of Transport have confirmed that the N1 highway between Mookgophong and Modimolle is now open for motorists.

Spokesperson for the Department of Transport, Matome Moremi-Taueatsoala says the accident scene has been cleared and the route is open for motorists to use.


POLOKWANE – The Department of Transport have just confirmed that one more person has died. This raises the death toll from 27 to 28.

Spokesperson for the Department of Transport, Matome Moremi-Taueatsoala says the patient passed away upon arrival at the hospital.

The N1 remains closed.


POLOKWANE – The Limpopo Department of Health have confirmed that 27 people have been declared dead in a multi-vehicle accident on the N1 between Kranskop and Middlefontein in the Mookgopong area.

The accident occurred when the front right tire of a truck burst causing it to hit oncoming traffic and not an overturned taxi as initially reported.

According to police spokesperson Col Moatshe Ngoepe, police in Modimolle are investigating a case of culpable homicide. Amongst the fatalities, two are minor children.

“The process of identifying the deceased is still underway,” he said.

As a result of the accident, the MEC for Transport and Community Safety in Limpopo, Makoma Makhurupetje has called on the national Department of Transport as well as SANRAL to assist on Limpopo’s Roads

The N1 remains closed for now.

POLOKWANE – Fourteen people have been killed in a multi-vehicle accident on the N1 between Kranskop and Middlefontein in the Mookgopong area, reports the Department of Traffic.

Motorists travelling from Gauteng are advised to use the Kranskop off-ramp to Modimolle and those travelling from Polokwane should use the R101 off-ramp at Mookgophong.

The Limpopo Department of Health confirmed that 14 people have died, multiple people have sustained serious injuries and one person sustained minor injuries.

According to reports, a minibus overturned and there is a truck and several other vehicles involved, with some vehicles are on fire.

Spokesperson for the Department of Transport, Matome Moremi-Taueatsoala says the N1 between Modimolle and Mookgophong is currently closed and emergency services are on scene.
