Education through sport is vital, says James

Jack of all trades, teacher and sports coach James Disoloane from Good Hope Primary School says children in primary school need to be involved in sporting activities.

POLOKWANE – “Learners get bored easily, this is something I have come to notice since I started working as a teacher, and I saw how helpful introducing physical activities were before I resumed teaching. These activities include warming up and light exercises. Learners got energised and were active in class, which is why I saw the need for sport activities to be rolled out regularly.”

The Gr 6 and 7 social science and maths teacher obtained a B. Ed degree, majoring in mathematics, information technology and computer applications technology from the University of Pretoria in 2009, and started working as a teacher at Good Hope Primary School in 2015.

“I started working as a teacher in 2010 at Mathabatha Secondary School teaching mathematics to Gr 8 to 12. Teaching is a calling and for one to succeed, one must have good listening skills. We can also learn from learners in terms of how they want to be taught.

“One must also be patient as learners are different and they learn at different paces, as well as understand the work differently. I moved to Good Hope because I wanted to conduct research to find out why learners struggle with maths.”

Currently he also coaches mini- soccer and he urges his colleagues and other teachers from other schools to think outside of the box with fun ways to introduce subjects and other academic activities such as through sport.
