Mayor blaims bridge collapse on ‘poor quality work’

Greater Letaba Municipality Mayor Peter Matlou blamed poor quality work done during a construction of a collapsed bridge which links Mpepule and Shamfana villages.

LIMPOPO – He was responding to concerns raised by residents of Ward 26 during an imbizo held at Shamfana village on Thursday.

Matlou said the municipality does not overlook problems raised by residents in terms of service delivery.

However, in terms of poor quality of gravel roads in the area, Matlou said there is a grader from the Department of Public Works stationed at a local tribal court, which will soon start with the grading of the roads and internal streets in the villages around Ward 26.

Other concerns raised by the community, which is a prerogative of sister departments ,will be referred to the relevant people to be attended to. “This is a way of trying to listen to what the community needs so that service delivery can improve,” Matlou said.

One of the residents of Shamfana village, Obed Mohatli said taxi drivers does not want to make use of a single route and they create a serious confusion amongst commuters.

In terms of water, Steve Sekgobela from Mpepule village called for the municipality and the Department of Water and Sanitation to build a bigger reservoir in order to be able to store more water, which will be able to supply the community at large. “The current reservoir is very small and this result in some resident’s not getting water,” Sekgobela said.

He also complained about the main street which becomes a muddy mess after heavy rain, which results in motorists and residents struggling to access the road.
