School soccer team proof that soccer is not only for boys

The fact that soccer is relatively new to the young ladies at Taxila Seconday School, has not stopped the teams from impressing the local soccer fraternity.

POLOKWANE – The sport was only introduced in 2017 and since then the young ladies have excelled on the soccer field, explains Luis Pereira, soccer coach and teacher at the school.
“The girls play well and their skills and knowledge regarding the sport has developed. Girls are easier to teach due to the fact that they are eager to learn more about the sport as compared to boys who think they know the sport. As their coach I am very proud of their improvement and I am happy to help them reach their full potential as soccer players,” explained Luis.

Angela Setumo, a member of the team and a soccer fanatic said she jumped at the opportunity to play a sport that her brothers and father watched while she was growing up.

“Soccer has always seemed different and interesting and when the sport was introduced at school something told me to give the sport a try. I immediately tried out for the team and now I am enjoying the sport immensely. I play the defence position because coach says I have ‘mad’ defence skills,” she explained.

Morongwa Mokgobu is a striker in nature and says she surprised herself with the skills she has developed in soccer. “I scored a few proud goals and I am most trusted by my team mates and coach. I love the sport and I want to encourage other girls to know that soccer is a sport that can be played by anyone regardless of gender or age,” she concluded.
