The R37 has since been cleared and the situation is calm

LIMPOPO – The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt Genl Nneke Ledwaba, has condemned the recent acts of violence in the Atok area where residents barricaded the R37 and torched a truck.

This condemnation follows the incident where residents from Maepa village barricaded the R37 road with rocks, burning tyres and rubble on Tuesday evening until early this morning,” said Police spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe.

Passing motor vehicles were pelted with stones and a truck was burned to ashes during these protests.

“The total damage caused during this violent protest is estimated to millions of Rand and no injuries or fatalities were reported,” he added.

Cases of malicious damage to property and public violence were opened and officers from the Public Order Police Unit have since cleared the road.

“At this stage the situation is quite but POP members are still monitoring the area.”
