Five light aircraft were destroyed when a fire broke out in one of the hangars at the Polokwane Civil Airport on Saturday morning.
According to a source, it is alleged that aviation fuel (avgas) that was brought into the hangar in a container in contravention of regulations, caught fire.
“The loss can run into millions,” a local aircraft owner who wishes to remain anonymous, said to Polokwane Observer.
Neither Communications Marketing Manager of Polokwane Municipality, Matshidiso Mothapo nor SAPS Provincial Spokesperson, Moatshe Ngoepe could be reached for comment earlier this morning (Monday).
Senior Manager: Accident and Incident Investigations of the South African Civil Aviation Authority (Sacaa), Albert Morudi, confirmed that the authority was not involved in the investigation.
