3 families mourn after explosion

A tragic accident claimed three lives and left the community of Moshate village outside Mokopane in mourning.

MOKOPANE – Michael Hlokota, community activist and businessmen, said according to the family, Nelly Kekana (60) and her daughter Anna Kekana (19) smelled a gas leak inside her house on 6 September.

“Anna left the house and Nelly called two men Jacky Modisha (38) and Malesela Monama (30) in her neighbourhood to help her.

“There was an open fire near the house and everything caught fire and the gas bottles exploded.

“Anna escaped this tragic event by running to the neighbours.”

Hlokota said all three sustained serious injuries and was transported to Mokopane Hospital who then transferred the patients to Mankweng Hospital due to the degree of their burns.

“Unfortunately Modisha passed away on 16 September, Monama on 17 September and Nelly Kekana on 18 September. Modisha and Monama were buried on Saturday, 22 September and Kekana on 24 September at Mogalakwena Cemetery.”

Hlokota said: “The three families are traumatised by these events and they need the support of the community, especially Anna, the sister of Monama who is an orphan after her brothers’ death. He was the breadwinner.

“I do want to thank the following community members and businessmen who went out of there way to help these families: Michael Hlokota, Tobias Nashala, Doctor Kekana, Johanna Mashala, Giver Mothoa, Ben Masanabo and Dr Vernon Els and Dr Hentie Vogel.”
