Don’t forget your lips, they need protection from the sun too

When taking part in sport, local dermatologist Dr Ajaz Shah suggests one should wear sunblock on the face, including the lips.

POLOKWANE – “Some people have the tendency of not protecting their lips from the sun, which is a big mistake. You can apply sunblock on the lips, but just make sure that it’s the regular sunblock that you apply on your lips. If you don’t feel comfortable with applying sun block on your lips, you can always opt for a sun protection SPF 25 lip balm to protect your lips.”

When going out regularly doing some shopping or hanging out with friends for lunch or a picnic, Dr Shah adds that because the skin on our lips is extremely thin, this makes them more prone to damage, not just from the sun, but from extreme cold and also the wind.

“Try using SPF lip balms to protects the skin. Just remember that the sun does not only damage the skin when shining, it can also damage your skin when it is overcast. So you must always apply a lip balm that has a SPF protection, and apply some sun screen on your skin as well,” he concluded.
