[WATCH] Transport Dept and Zambian officials host mini service for bus accident victims

The mini prayer service was held this morning at the Pietersburg Provincial Hospital's Recreational Hall

POLOKWANE – The MEC of Transport in Limpopo, Makome Makhurupetje as well as the High Commissioner of Zambia, Emmanuel Mwamba, this morning held a mini service with the family members of the 11 deceased bus accident passengers that happened on Monday, 17 September.

The accident, which occurred on the N1 between Mookgophong and Mokopane, claimed the lives of 11 Zambian nationals who were travelling on a bus which overturned.

The mini prayer service was held this morning, 23 September, at the Pietersburg Provincial Hospital’s Recreational Hall.

MEC Makhurupetje added that more measures need to be put in place to assure the safety of all people travelling on Limpopo’s roads.

After the service, the bodies will be taken to the Polokwane International Airport for a final repatriation send off. The bodies will be transported on a Zambian Airforce (ZAF) Plane to Ndola and Lusaka.

Zambian President, Edgar Lungu has declared a day of national mourning for the deceased to be observed on the day of burial.

“I am deeply saddened at the death of eleven people following a fatal Road Accident in Mokopane, Limpopo Province in South Africa on Monday 17th September 2018. We are happy that the Zambian Mission in Pretoria, the Zambia Airforce (ZAF) and the South African Government have coordinated well in efforts to care for those injured and still admitted to hospital along with those that will be repatriated on Sunday 23rd September 2018 to Ndola and Lusaka. On behalf of the government and the nation at large, let me convey our sincere condolences to the bereaved families and wish those injured, a quick recovery. May God lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace,” he said.
