Two illegal miners found dead during rescue mission at an unused mine outside Giyani

One suspect, who was rushed to hospital was arrested for illegal mining.

POLOKWANE – Police in Giyani are investigating the death of two illegal miners who died at an old unused mine between Xikukwani and Mavalane villages on the outskirts of Giyani.

According to police spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe, police received information that there were miners trapped inside the mine on Saturday, 22 September.

Police reacted swiftly and a rescue operation ensued composing of the police and the local community.

“During this operation, the people were removed and two of the three had already died. One was still alive and he was taken to hospital to receive medical treatment. A case of inquest has been opened,” he said.

The process of identifying one of the two deceased is still underway and with one positively identified as Patson Mbhiza (33) from Mavalani Village outside Giyani.

“The suspect receiving medical attention was arrested for illegal mining and he will appear before the Giyani Magistrates Court soon,” Ngoepe concluded.
