Mitchell House’s Intermediate Phase learners set the stage alight when they brought to life a play based on Lewis Carroll’s ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’ during a concert at the school recently.
Their play was titled ‘Alice’s Land of Wonders’ and participants were dressed in colourful clothes with their hilarious make-up adding more flavour to the play. The lead character ‘Alice’ was played by Mmasape Manthata who aced the role, leaving the audience asking for more.
Principal Andrew Cook said school plays are an extraordinary test of team work on the part of the cast and the academic staff who manage the process. A huge amount of effort goes into any production but it is worth it because there are so many benefits to exposing learners to drama, he stated. Cook further emphasised that participants learn self-confidence, collaboration, communication skills, and in the hands of skilled and enthusiastic directors, they have a lot of fun. He thanked everyone who made the play a success, not forgetting parents who waited for rehearsals to finish and have provided yet another opportunity for their children to enjoy a holistic education.
Deputy head Kerry Spratt explained that Alice in the Land of Wonders had been two terms in the making, and has brought learners and staff of the intermediate phase together to create something magical. “No production is ever without its hiccups and I would like to salute the staff and learners for taking these in their stride. One just had to pop into a rehearsal to feel a real sense of camaraderie and spirit,” Spratt said.
