Balancing books and sport

Khanyisa Maswanganyi is a Gr 12 learner at Flora Park Comprehensive High School who is balancing athletics and academics.

POLOKWANE – The 17-year-old started taking part in athletics when she was in creche because her mother is an avid runner and she would take her along to marathons. She is also a debate extraordinaire but insists she could never be able to choose between the two.

“My mom is my best friend. She was an athlete in high school as well so she understands exactly how to support me,” she said.

Khanyisa is an A student, with her worst performance being when she gets a 70%.

“I love physical sciences, English, Xitsonga and life science. I am always among the top three performers at school. My secret is to study the simple subjects first and dedicating Friday, Saturday and Sunday to mathematics, life sciences and physical science.”

She has a keen interest in politics and reads articles and watches documentaries about things happening around the world to stay abreast of current affairs. “I take interest in social issues but after school I plan to study a B.Sc degree, majoring in physics and chemistry. I have applied to study at every university in the country,” she said, adding she doesn’t have many friends but it’s easier for her because the friends she has are part of the activities she participates in.

“My teammates when I am training for athletics are the same people I hang out with. We sometimes hang out outside of practice and competitions,” she explained. She trains under the guidance of coach George Mehale who ensures she is always on top of her game. She has had to allow athletics to take the backseat for a while as she saw her marks slipping a bit in the first term.

“I had to divert my attention back to school so I can give it 100%. Right now, my main focus is making sure that I finish school.”

She advises anyone who wants to always do their best to find balance in school and extramural activities and to not overthink things.

“Always be prepared and aware of the fact your plans can be deterred at any moment. Expect the unexpected and you won’t be sidetracked when something doesn’t go according to plan. Find something that can help take your mind off things,” she shared.
