Lim Transport MEC urges motorists to check their tyres before driving

This follows the death of 11 people on the N1 near Tobias this morning

POLOKWANE – The MEC for Transport & Community Safety, Makoma Makhurupetje has expressed her shock at the bus accident which claimed 11 lives this morning, 17 September.

The MEC has extended her heartfelt condolences to the affected families and further wished a speedy recovery to the injured passengers.

“It is unacceptable that we had to lose eleven lives in this kind of accident. Before embarking on any trip, it is important for motorists to always check the condition of their tyres. Whilst investigations are underway, we urge all road users to be vigilant at all times and to only use roadworthy vehicles” she said.

The accident happened on the N1 near Tobias when a Scania bus transporting passengers from Zambia overturned due to a tyre puncture. Eleven passengers died, nine are seriously injured and 30 passengers sustained minor injuries. Two others are critically injured and were airlifted to the Provincial hospital for further care.
