The N1 was reopened just after midday following a fatal bus accident between Mokopane and Mookgophong earlier this morning (Monday) in which 12 persons died.
Spokesperson for the Department of Transport and Community Safety, Matome Moremi-Taueatsoala said a further nine people were seriously and another 30 slightly injured. One of two critically injured passengers was airlifted to Pietersburg Provincial Hospital.
The bus was transporting people from Zambia to Johannesburg when the accident occurred. The driver was allegedly speeding when he blew a tyre and lost control causing it to overturn, according to Moremi-Taueatsoala.
He added that besides Pietersburg Provincial Hospital the injured were also taken to FH Odendaal and Voortrekker hospitals in Modimolle and Mokopane respectively.
Transport MEC Makoma Makhurupetje extended her heartfelt condolences to the affected families.
Provincial Police Spokesperson Moatshe Ngoepe confirmed that Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.
