New house for child-headed family of six

The sun rises over a new house for a family of six school going children who lived in a shack and survived on social grants and handouts from the neighbours.

MOKOPANE – According to Andrina Matsemela, Mayor of Mogalakwena, they were aware of the family in Mapela, Ga-Molekane village who are looked after by the oldest unemployed brother Thabang Matsaung (24) since their mother passed away.

“The children have lived in a shack for years and we did our best and bought these children school uniforms. We also engaged Mogalakwena Anglo Platinum Mine and a house was built for the children in collaboration with Nale Holdings, WBA Holding and other local businesses.”

Matsemela said: “I am touched by the level of care in this community especially their neighbour, Victoria Machoga, who made sure that the children don’t go to bed hungry. I am extremely excited that we gather here this morning to officially hand-over the house as this will bring hope to the children. We are honoured to witness the end result and we will continue to support this family. We will do the same for other destitute families within our municipality.”

Matsemela concluded saying it pains her to see families in our municipality who are struggling to stay afloat in these difficult economic times. “I long to see every family supported, especially those that are headed by children or grandmothers. These are our most vulnerable families and they must be supported. My prayer is that this house will become a home, a place where this family can feel safe, where they can rest and share meals and have conversations.”
