A second pump in the line from the Olifantspoort water treatment works is now also out of order and repairs in progress. For the time being, the city’s reservoir levels are critically low, resulting in low pressure and water shortages in most areas of supply.
Communications and Marketing Manager of Polokwane Municipality, Matshidiso Mothapo, advised earlier this morning (Friday) that the Olifantspoort plant was running at low capacity due to challenge with a second pump at pump station 3 (PS3). Lepelle Northern Water is still busy with repairs, but has managed to accumulate water to Palmietfontein reservoir in order to increase pressure and they will be realising water shortly, Mothapo added.
According to Mothapo, the Dalmada plant will also be pumping more to increase supply to the reservoirs in the city. The underground water system as well as the Ebenezer plant are also running at full capacity.
“All supply areas in the city and Seshego are affected and still experiencing shortages. However, it is expected that there should be improvement as the day progresses. Update on PS3 will be made once feedback is received,” Mothapo promised.
“Residents in areas receiving water are urged to assist the recovery process by using as little water as possible. Strictly, no watering of gardens and lawns should take place,” Mothapo urged.
Mothapo said that, in the meantime, the municipality will continue with deployment of water tankers to affected areas. “Please note that due to the wider area to be covered including rural areas, it is not possible to be at all places at the same time. However the municipality has sought assistance of more water tankers to accommodate the demand,” Mothapo said and added that the water helpline is experiencing high call volumes and as a result some of the calls are not able to go through.
“The municipality apologises for the inconvenience caused and appreciate your patience during this period,” Mothapo concluded.
