Brown hyena found near Mall of the North

According to the Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism, brown hyenas do occur locally.

POLOKWANE – A reader, who took the photo’s just before the offramp to Mall of the North, spotted the Brown Hyena on the side of the road on Wednesday, 12 September.

The brown hyena is currently described as the rarest species of hyena, but according to a source in nature conservation section of the Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism, brown hyenas do occur locally.

“They are harmless animals, not dangerous at all, and are carrion-eaters, struggling to hunt. They will also eat fruit and birds’ eggs should they come across it and can travel 20 to 35 km to search for carrion. They are mostly nocturnal,” Review was told.
