Sun International’s R76 million investment in the establishment of Meropa Hotel formed part of the company’s commitment to the City of Polokwane and the Limpopo Gambling Board.
It has been a year since the hotel opened its doors for business, heralding a new era for Meropa Casino and Entertainment complex. Sun Meropa General Manager Peter Guthrie reportedly said the opening of the upmarket hotel in August 2017 came less than a year after Sun International and the Domba Empowerment Corporation (PTY) Ltd had announced the expansion plans for the complex.
The hotel development provides economic stimulus for the province through job creation and tourism to the area. With the largest, contemporary casino floor in Polokwane, a selection of dining and entertainment options and the beautiful hotel, Meropa is emerging as the premier leisure, business and conferencing destination in Limpopo, he stated. The new Meropa Hotel flows seamlessly into the casino complex and reflects the discerning Moroccan styled architecture and aesthetics that make the complex distinctly Sun Meropa, Guthrie explained, adding that the hotel boasts 60 immaculate rooms with a Moroccan theme including four suites and two luxury suites.
Catering to business and leisure travellers, the hotel features all amenities and the high quality of service that Sun International’s guests are accustomed to, it was learnt. He indicated that the complex, which celebrated its 16th anniversary in March, is a vibrant entertainment hub at the heart of Polokwane, offering an array of entertainment and experiences for both young and old. The complex features the upmarket Harvest Grill and Wine restaurant, the contemporary Jembe Tavern which hosts regular live entertainment and a well-equipped and versatile conference centre, he emphasised. Guthrie said the casino boasts 417 slot machines and 17 tables including classics such as Roulette, Blackjack and Poker.
“Turning one is a proud milestone for Meropa Hotel. Not only does it mark our first successful year of business success, but it also marks the start of a new phase as we move forward as an established ‘citizen’ of the community. From the outset, we have known that our success and sustainability depends on our ability to constantly deliver premium and value-adding services, quality facilities, and a food and beverage offering that acknowledges contemporary dining trends. We must help build and maintain a sustainable community, contribute to the local economy, and promote a healthy environment.”
He further explained that customers are the lifeblood of their business, adding that products and services innovation will receive increasing emphasis going forward to ensure that they remain relevant to customers and continue contributing to the local economy as an active member of the tourism community.
