Working on Fire (WoF) has dispatched 70 firefighters and two divisional supervisors for the suppression of veld fires which broke out in mountainous areas of farms in the Mokopane and Thabazimbi areas on Tuesday.
Mmatema Gwangwa, Spokesperson for WoF indicated that the fires started on Monday morning and damaged vegetation and plantation in, among others, the Moorddrift area on the R101. Yesterday (Wednesday), Gwangwa informed Polokwane Observer that two extra teams had been dispatched assist in the process.
“Some areas are still burning and we are working around the clock to ensure that we suppress all the fires. The cause of the fires is unknown but we plead with the communities to report all the fires that they see in their areas to their local fire brigade immediately and to refrain from starting fires in open areas, as that might lead to runaway fires. Our plea is also to motorists to refrain from throwing out cigarette stubs outside while driving,” Gwangwa said.
