Doek with a Difference for CANSA

Corné Marais, Office Manager at Cansa Polokwane, confirmed the doeks and fabric will be available at the Cansa Care Centre in College Street.

POLOKWANE – The pink cancer ribbon is associated with breast cancer.

Every so often you will see trees draped in pink in an effort to create awareness about breast cancer.

The non-profit company, Pink Trees for Pauline, is a charity organisation that was started in 2012 in Graaff-Reinet by Carol-Ann van Jaarsveldt who took the legacy of her mother and grandmother and turned it into a story of hope.

Carol-Ann lost her mother and grandmother, both named Pauline, to cancer.

The Pink Trees for Pauline initiative was then born, as Carol-Ann felt each of us knows or is connected to, our own ‘Pauline’ and to raise cancer awareness, all the trees along the roads in Graaff-Reinet were wrapped in pink material.

This year the campaign kicks off next month by launching a new campaign namely #doekwithadifference. This will be run in association with Cansa.

The slogan of Pink Trees for Pauline is ‘Wrapped in colour, unite in hope’, and this new campaign aims to raise money specifically for care and support programmes for cancer patients and those affected by cancer.

The #doekwithadifference head wrap or scarf will be available in pink and green and sold at R70 each to raise money.

Managing Director of Pink Trees for Pauline, Adri Jansen van Nieuwenhuizen, says they hope to turn heads and bring awareness to the challenges and issues people with cancer face.

In addition, individuals and companies can still show their support by buying the pink fabric at R25 per metre and wrapping trees in their communities.

Corné Marais, Office Manager at Cansa Polokwane, confirmed the doeks and fabric will be available at the Cansa Care Centre in College Street.

“The plan is not only to make money this September and October, but to raise awareness by turning the city pink. We also want to raise awareness about the services Cansa has to offer to patients and their families.”

Participants are encouraged to be creative and to take a lot of photos to promote this campaign.

“This can be a great team-building opportunity and companies could further engage with #doekwithadifference by launching spin-off initiatives such as ‘Wrapped on Wednesday’ or ‘Best Wrapped’.”
