An open day hosted by the South African Army Support Formation at Seshego stadium on Sunday gave young people from Polokwane and surrounds an opportunity to explore some of the career opportunities available in the army.
The young people were treated to a static military display and parade. They also had one on one interaction with the soldiers and had a glimpse of equipment and vehicles.
Vuyiseka Pamla, media liaison officer at the formation said the core objective of the vent was to take the defence force to the people.
“We wanted to give them a hands-on experience and one on one interaction with the soldiers concerning our military capabilities and to give clarity concerning our career opportunities,” Pamla explained and added that they had succeeded.
Mapula Mokaba-Phukwana, MEC for Social Development visited some exhibition areas and got a glimpse of the gun-howitzer which is used to assist the infantry during war.
She described the event as an exciting recruitment strategy by the SA Army Support Formation.
“We are hoping that young people will be in love with the army because there are lots of opportunities in the field,” Mokaba-Phukwana said.
Among the attendants was Kgothatso Lekgau from Seleteng in the Ga-Mphahlele area who said the open day had enlightened him.
“The event was an eye-opener. I did not know that there are more careers in the army. I thought it was only soldiers in the army who are just there doing nothing because there is no war in the country. But I am glad there are aviation, engineering, communication and marketing departments, so I am spoiled for choice.”
