Shopper’s car wheels clamped after prolonged time, Mall of the North explains why

After an upset resident approached BONUS following an incident where his car's wheels were clamped at Mall of the North, we wanted to know from the mall management what the policy is regarding this type of action.

POLOKWANE – Mall of the North General Manager, Sumari de Ridder, and Mall of the North Security Manager, Jurgens Nel, explained the decision was made to clamp the vehicle’s wheels as the driver left the vehicle parked on the premises for a prolonged period of time while leaving the mall premises.

“Although patrons park on mall premises entirely at their own risk, mall management take every precaution to ensure that patrons and their property are safe for the time that they shop here. Parking is reserved for customers only, which basically means that you park, you shop and you go home and you can therefore not leave your vehicle here for ‘safekeeping’ while you go somewhere else.

“Leaving a vehicle unattended in the mall parking lot is totally unacceptable and deprive other shoppers from secure prime customer parking. The man in question left his vehicle unattended for several hours after leaving the premises with a friend. It also causes a risk of loss for the mall as the shoppers might go elsewhere instead of shopping at the mall due to parking spaces being unfairly occupied by people who are not shopping at the mall,” De Ridder explained.

She added that the same applies to mall employees as they have to park their vehicles on specifically allocated parking spaces as the vehicle will occupy the space for a prolonged period of time.

The mall management advised the community to be considerate of other shoppers when they visit the mall, especially when it comes to parking space, to avoid similar action being taken against them.

Basic parking and traffic rules/laws apply inside the mall grounds too. Mall management said the public must also respect the fact that able bodied patrons should refrain from parking on disabled parking and also not on yellow or red lines.

The man whose vehicle was clamped told BONUS he had to pay a fine of R200 before his vehicle could be released.
