Suspected mastermind behind R100 million fraud attempt in dock

The 41-year-old woman is one of four people behind the attempted crime

LIMPOPO –A 41-year-old woman, and suspected mastermind behind an alleged R100 million fraud attempt at a bank in Burgersfort, appeared before the Praktiseer District Court today and was remanded in custody until 3 September for a formal bail application.

Spokesperson for the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation Unit, Capt Matimba Maluleke, said the incident occurred on 20 July, where is alleged her accomplices (aged 27, 29 and 40) approached a female consultant at the said bank and requested her to assist them to open a fraudulent account where the R100 million was to be transferred from the Royal Bafokeng Trust account.

“All three accomplices were arrested on the spot and further investigation by the led to her arrest on Tuesday in Alexandra, Gauteng.”

“The trio have since appeared before the same court on separate occasions. Two of the three have been remanded in custody until 4 October and the third granted bail of R3 000. ”

The possibility of more arrests cannot be ruled out, Maluleke concluded.
