LIMPOPO – Spokesperson Col Moatshe Ngoepe said the accused, Agree Malepe was found guilty of stealing chrome on 27 March 2017 and was sentenced to six years imprisonment without an option of a fine.
“It is alleged that the complainant was on duty at Eastern Chrome Mine outside Burgersfort when he was informed that one of the security guards tried to bribe his colleague with R5000 for a truck from Tweenfontein Mine. The truck was loaded with clean metcon chrome material valued at an estimated amount of R108 800, which was never delivered,” he explained.
A case of theft was opened and the suspect was arrested.The investigators worked tirelessly on the case until the accused was ultimately sentenced, he said.
The South African Police Service in the province welcomed the long jail term meted out.
The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba, has commended the Team of Provincial Detectives who have, through their meticulous investigations, acquired this long jail term which will serve as a deterrent to all the people who are still perpetrating any form of criminality affecting the mining industry.
