Water shortages experienced – muni appeals to residents for help in conserving water

"Avoiding intensive water shortages cannot be achieved by the municipality alone and requires a collective effort by all residents. If we don’t pull together now and drive down water usage even further, we face the risk of disrupting the daily lives of our households and businesses for a long time to come."

POLOKWANE – Some parts of the city are currently experiencing water shortages due to an unexpected drop in reservoir levels, reports the Polokwane Municipality.

“This is attributed to low supply being currently received from Olifantspoort and high consumption due to watering of lawns and gardens.”

Affected areas include parts of the Fauna Park, Flora Park, Serala View, Ster Park and Bendor areas.

“Low catchment areas in parts of Flora Park, Fauna Park, Bendor, Welgelegen, Ladanna  have been identified as the culprits for high water consumption – particularly for watering of gardens. We urge residents in the unaffected areas to use this precious resource sparingly. Watering of lawns and gardens is strictly prohibited.”

“Avoiding intensive water shortages cannot be achieved by the municipality alone and requires a collective effort by all residents. If we don’t pull together now and drive down water usage even further, we face the risk of disrupting the daily lives of our households and businesses for a long time to come.”

“The actions required to get the area to survive through these difficult times are everyone’s responsibility.”

All water must be conserved now, including underground water from boreholes as this is another source of supply to the rest of the communities. Lepelle Northern Water (LNW) is working jointly with Polokwane Municipality to rectify the situation and appeals to residents to continue to use water sparingly.

In the meantime, water tankers will be deployed to affected areas as a temporary relief measure.

Dalmada purification is also open for those who are able to fetch water from there.
