Mokopane: Mixed feelings over height and placement of speed humps

Although the busy streets in town now boast new speed humps, not everyone is happy.

MOKOPANE – The abnormal high humps in Pretorius Street caused so much trouble that the municipality decided to remove it.

Speedhump erected in Pretorius- and Kerk Street.

Malesela Selokela, Head of Communications at the Mogalakwena Municipality, says the reason for erecting speed humps, especially in Dudu Madisha Drive is to reduce accidents and reduce speeding.

“There are usually a lot of accidents and drivers over speeding even up to 100 km and above. People also ignore the stop streets which causes accidents. Since the speed humps were erected we have seen significantly less accidents.

“We were aware of one speed hump in Dudu Madisha Drive being too high, but it has already been rebuilt. We realise that a lot of people do not favour the new humps, but it is only for residents’ own safety.”

According to Yolande Coetzee, DA Ward Councillor, the speed humps in Pretorius Street were removed after a request by her, Korny Dekker, as well as the community. “The speed humps in this street caused a lot of problems, including an accident on Wednesday morning. That is when we decided to ask for the removal of the humps. The municipality are still deciding whether they are going to totally remove it, build smaller ones or build a traffic circle.”

Dekker, told Bosveld that he is very impressed with the speed humps especially in Dudu Madisha Drive.

“From what I know before the speed humps was erected there were seven lives lost in that street over three weekends. In the first two weeks that it was erected there was only one bumper bash. I know that there are a lot of unhappy people but they have to understand it is for safety purposes.”

Comments from other anonymous residents are: “The speed humps are too high. With a small car that I am driving I struggle to drive over it, they must round it up on the edges” and “the speed humps in Dudu Madisha Drive are too close to the stop signs.

“People just drive over the speed hump and still don’t stop like they should. That leads to confusion at the intersections, causing accidents.”
