As part of Women’s Month celebrations the Police launched Operation Basadi manned by female officers and a handful of male officers who conducted roadblocks, patrols, stop and search operations and tracing of suspects in various clusters across the province on the weekend.
Provincial Police Spokesperson Moatshe Ngoepe indicated that female officers from units such as crime intelligence, the Hawks, reservists as well as officials of Limpopo Economic Development and Tourism, Department of Home Affairs and provincial and municipal traffic departments joined the operation.
The operation was focussing on violent crimes against women and children, mushrooming of drugs, illegal trade of liquor and non-compliance of the liquor Act, Road Traffic Act violations and contravention of the migration Act, according to Ngoepe who added that vehicles and occupants were searched during roadblocks and maximum police visibility was also achieved through vehicle and foot patrols.
Several suspects were arrested during the operation of which three are for contravention of the Road Traffic Act, 15 for possession of and dealing with dagga, three for selling liquor without a licence and 22 for contravention of the migration Act.
Ngoepe further indicated that six vehicle checkpoints, 28 stop and search operations and two roadblocks were conducted. A total of 378 vehicles and 413 people were searched while 19 spaza shops and 16 liquor outlets were visited. Three shebeens were closed.
