1 078 game reserve animals up for auction tomorrow

Game enthusiasts in the city and surrounding areas can get their hands on prime wildlife when 1 078 animal go under the hammer on Saturday, 18 August.

POLOKWANE – The auction is set to take place at the Polokwane Game Reserve and a notice was issued earlier in August with an ad appearing in Review’s sister newspaper, BONUS.

According to Jane Mabaso, a member of the management team at the game reserve, the auction forms part of the Polokwane Municipality’s conservation goals as the animals’ numbers at the game reserve are growing too much.

“We last had a similar auction and 2015 and during our routine inspection last year, we found the number of animals per hectare in the game reserve was too high which led to overgrazing. This prompted the decision to hold an auction with the aim of reducing the number,” Mabaso explained.

Among the animals that will be up for auction are kudu, impala, giraffe, ostrich and zebra as well as blue wildebeest.

According to an anonymous source close to the dealings, the animals will only be caught after being bought in order to lessen the stress on the animals.

The auction is open for the public and starts at 11:00 and is done by Tirhani Auctioneers.
