Facial hair and how you can deal with it as a woman

Dermatologist, Dr Ah Shah explains what causes unwanted facial hair (such as beard) among women, which makes them feel uncomfortable about their feminine features.

POLOWKANE – He explains excess hair growth on unwanted areas is caused by an increased level of male hormones called androgens, which is a male sex hormone, such as testosterone.

“Though all females produce androgens, increased levels of androgens can lead to hirsutism,” Shah said.
For women who are very uncomfortable with unwanted hair anywhere on their face, Shah advises they get laser hair removal, which can be the best option and choice.

“This is one popular option provided by most doctors, dermatologists to be exact,” he said.

He added the laser hair removal works by using a specialised laser that penetrates into the deeper layers of the skin. During this procedure, Shah explained dermatologists use the pigment of the hair as a guide, and the laser targets the hair follicle which uses the heat of the laser to disrupt the hair to grow as usual.

“Naturally, women are not supposed to experience male-related hair growth in any form. It can get very uncomfortable for women and most of them are quite embarrassed to even talk about the problem. But just shaving the hair off with a razor won’t do the trick. With the laser procedure, however, unwanted hair won’t grow back which is why most dermatologists prefer laser treatments to resolve unwanted hair,” he explained.

He added any regrowth can be managed with touch-up treatments every six to 12 months.

“Patients who undergo laser hair removal need to remember that before the laser treatments, they need to stay away from sunlight and avoid using tanning products, be it a tanning spray or tanning beds. They must shave the specific area before coming in for a laser treatment, and those are just a few things to do before getting a laser treatment,” he concluded.
