Digital educator and former school principal Phuti Ragophala was named 2018 Science and Technology Educator of the Year at the Inspiring Fifty Awards ceremony recently held in Cape Town.
Ragophala whisked away the title in front of the noses of 50 other female Science and Technology educators from schools across the country.
Inspiring Fifty Awards is a Dutch-born non-profit organisation which showcases inspiring female role models in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (Stem).
After her retirement in 2016, Ragopahala opened a digital school at her home in Seshego where she is currently using digital tools in online teaching and learning. She also uses a skyping application to offer online lessons nationally and internationally.
Ragophala said the award is a reward for her efforts of advocating technology and digital learning in rural communities.
“I am happy to have won the award. It means a lot to me and shows that technology is not for young people only.
“I am over 60 years old now and many people of my age are not interested in anything. With this award I hope to motivate and inspire fellow retired educators to join me in the quest of bridging the digital divide,” Ragophala said.
