Some 700 athletes from different schools in the province competed for a spot in the provincial team that will represent Limpopo at the national cross country championships designated to be held in Port Elizabeth on 8 September.
Athletes contested during the Limpopo Athletics (Lima) qualifying round organised by Laerskool Pietersburg-Oos (Oosskool) at Polokwane Game Reserve on Saturday.
Lima chairperson Phillip Entres said 18 athletes in each age group were to be selected and added that in excess of 44 age groups were participating on the day. Last year two athletes from Limpopo won their categories in the national championships, a great achievement according to Entres.
Event organiser, Nora Kohl said the gathering was a success and all the athletes had done their best. She indicated that this was the last round prior to the national championships and athletes who made it to Limpopo team would be announced by Lima later in the week.
Cross country coach Disego Mashao from Makgatsike Primary School was delighted with the way the event was organised and remarked that the venue was perfect for cross country competitions.
He also said he was attending the gathering to support his athletes and also learn how they could improve their skills in the future. Lima thanked Oosskool for organising the event.
