Leak ‘sinks’ business in CDB

A businessman in the city, Aamir Ali, the owner of Ali's Upholstery, is fed up with the puddle of water in front of his business.

POLOKWANE – The puddle, which is at the corner of Grobler and General Joubert streets has been a thorn in the side of this businessman because it is directly in front of the entrance of his shop. It is affecting his business because the area is wet and looks untidy.

He believes clients just don’t want the hassle of having to jump over the puddle or walking into it to get into the shop. He explained that in the photo taken on 31 July, the puddle was relatively small to how it sometimes looks.

“Some days it floods up the entire right side of the entrance, so much so that I have to completely close it as well as half the door on the left side of the entrance. It really puts people off when they have to come into my business and it looks untidy,” he said.

Ali added this is not the first time this is happening and the municipality did come to ‘fix’ the problem but the person who was working on it just threw sand over it and the wet patch was back again in a few days.

“The last time I complained was because they left a heap of soil directly in front of the entrance which obstructed my business to add on top of the leakage. When they came, they just took that sand and threw it over the wet area and left it as it is. They were here about two weeks ago as well but they did the exact same thing, they just put sand over it and the water just seeps through the sand and leaves the place muddy,” he explained. BONUS reported the matter to the municipality but nothing had been done by the time of going to print.
