Newly appointed MEC ready to develop Lim’s sport, art and culture talent

Newly appointed MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, Thandi Moraka, said she will hit the ground running with heading the department as the Annual Performance Plan (APP) has already been adopted.

POLOKWANE – Moraka outlined her plans and gave the media the opportunity to get to know her better during a meet and greet on Friday, 27 July.

Moraka said as MEC, she plans to make a point thereof to ensure the department meets the targets as stipulated in the APP.

“We are in the process of implementing the adopted APP, so this year I will only be able to monitor the implementation. In the next financial year we can look at ways we can improve our performance and our innovation in certain areas,” Moraka said.

She told BONUS that Limpopo is a diverse province in terms of both culture and tradition.

“In terms of sport, as a province we must pride ourselves on the process of identifying talent among the youth. What I am going to bring to this vibrant department is the energy it lacks in terms of particular aspects. When identifying a champion who will represent us as a province, we must take pride in those individuals. This particular exercise should not find us wanting; we need to be involved with the process of identifying talent from the grass root level,” she said.

She said young people in this province, particular those who came from the rural areas, are taking sport for granted and the department wants to turn the situation around to encourage them to make sport their daily activities.

“Currently as the department, we are in the process of renovating the Thohoyandou Stadium. This is within the spirit of saying we want to embrace our own teams who are in the Premier Soccer League (PSL). We want to say tell the country Limpopo is equally as talented and able to compete in sporting challenges like the PSL. The department is committed to the mandate to make it a point that we embrace the talent that we have in our province of Limpopo,” she explained.

She added in terms of art and culture, as a department they are determined to work hand in hand with her so they can achieve their goals.

“As the department we are more than prepared to help talented local artists. We make it a point to produce artists who can represent us nationally and internationally.

“We have big artists in Limpopo and we need to embrace them so that when we have the opportunity, we can help artists broaden their horizons while remaining within Limpopo’s borders instead of seeking their big break elsewhere. Priority will be given to local artists,” she concluded.
