Shops looted during violent Senwabarwana protest, six suspects arrested

Police say the situation is now calm but Public Order Police are still mointoring the area

LIMPOPO – Provincial Commissioner, Lt General Nneke Ledwaba has reiterated his disappointment regarding continuous acts of violent protest action in the province.

This, after six suspects between the ages of 24 and 46-years-old were arrested following violent protests on Monday, 30 July in the Kwarung and Bosehla villages in the Malebogo area under the  Senwabarwana Policing precinct of the Seshego Cluster

According to police spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe, residents went on rampage by blocking roads with burning tyres and rubble.

“Police were summoned and dispersed the crowd but they regrouped later in the day and began throwing stones as well as looting local shops. They stole a variety of items,” Ngoepe said.

He added, however, that the stolen property, which included electrical appliances, groceries and TV’s, were recovered in possession of the suspects.

“The arrested suspects will appear before the local Magistrates Court soon on charges of inciting public violence, theft, malicious damage to property and public violence. More arrests are expected.”

Ngoepe says the situation is now calm but Public Order Police are still mointoring the area.

“Residents who continue perpetrating these types of incidents will be dealt with mercilessly and without compromise,” concluded General Ledwaba.
