Police shooting sparks mob attack outside Giyani

A warrant officer was arrested following the shooting

LIMPOPO – A police captain was injured and several official vehicles damaged during a mob-related incident at Mphambo village outside Giyani on Saturday, 28 July.

This attack ensued after a warrant officer attached to the Giyani Public Order Police allegedly shot and killed a 37-year-old man and fled the scene. The deceased was allegedly shot several times and police were summoned to the scene where upon their arrival at the scene, where attacked by a group of angry residents who went on a rampage subsequent to this shooting, said Police spokesperson Col Moatshe Ngoepe.

During the attack a police captain was seriously injured and six police vehicles were damaged. No arrests have been made as yet.

Ngoepe added that the warrant officer involved in the said shooting has since been arrested.”The motive behind the incident will be revealed during the ongoing Police and IPID investigations.”

The Police in Malamulele have opened cases of murder and malicious damage to properties and appeals to anyone with information which can lead to the arrest of suspects involved in this mob-justice incident to contact Captain Richard Boshomane at 079 894 5501.

“Community members are warned to refrain from taking the law into their own hands as this practice continues to destroy the spirit of community policing”, said General Ledwaba.
