Diet doctor sets patients on road to wellness

With more than seven years of experience, Kulani Mtileni, is a young dietitian who has been saving lives by helping people change their diets.

POLOKWANE – The ambitious Mtileni was born at Mudabula village, just outside Malamulele. He is currently based in Polokwane where he not only runs a dietitian practice, he is also a businessman. He is the owner of Polokwane Cleaning Ladies which is a cleaning service.

“My schedule definitely keeps me busy but I love what I do so it’s not really much of an effort that I have to be all over the place at once. I sometimes wish I could divide myself into multiple versions in order to cover everything I have to, but I am a go-getter and everything I do, I do to the best of my ability” he explained.

One thing he does not compromise on, however, is his family time. He explained when he spends quality time with his wife and daughter, he does not allow any disturbance.

“There are no phones, not even any form of social media,” he emphasised. With the amount of love he has for his family, he shared that whenever he can spare time, he likes to travel and explore what the world has to offer. His all-time favourite place to go is Mpumalanga. “I love Mpumalanga, it is close to my heart because that is where my wife is from, plus, it’s warm,” he said with a chuckle.

As a dietitian he is passionate about nutrition and how food affects people’s lives and overall health. Translating the science of food into practical tips is challenging and sometimes clients get frustrated about diet changes.

“Some of the challenges I face as a dietitian is when people fail to understand how important diet change can be for a long and healthy life which is why I am sometimes met with resistance,” he added. He plans to further his studies and would like to research more about African foods and how our cultures affect food.
