Mayor gets hands dirty on Mandela Day

The community is proudly taking part in celebrating Nelson Mandela Month and even Mogalakwena Mayor, Andrina Matsemela, got her hands dirty last Friday picking up rubbish and lending her ears to passers-by in the Moshate area.

LIMPOPO – Matsemela and various municipality members, residents and members of the Vaaltyn Social and Economic Development Forum participated in a volunteer programme. They only had time to tackle some of the streets in Moshate on Friday including an illegal dumping site at Ga-Phahladira to pick up rubbish.

Sam Mokonyane, Chairperson of the forum, says: “The programme is still ongoing with various other activities on the list. Unfortunately, we only had time for picking up a certain amount of rubbish on Friday. We are very happy about the presence of Matsemela during the day. The illegal dumping site at Ga-Phahladira was really shocking. We are coming up with a plan to educate people in the area about the repercussions of dumping illegally”.

Matsemela says the amount of rubbish being dumped illegally, in not only this area but all over town and villages, is a real concern. “People must take their environment in consideration”
