Six die after underground fire at Phalaborwa mine

The Police Search and Rescue Unit this morning (Monday) at 02:35 retrieved the remains of the last of six mineworkers trapped underground at Phalabowa Copper Mine following a fire on Sunday.
Provincial Police Spokesperson Moatshe Ngoepe indicated that Police received information about the trapped mineworkers who were allegedly trapped after a fire at one of the conveyor belts.
A rescue mission commenced early morning and rescuers managed to retrieve one of the bodies during the day with the other five bodies only surfacing early this morning (Monday).
The deceased are all men and the process of identifying them is still unfolding, according to Ngoepe.
Investigations continue.
