Man (21) hospitalised after hit-and-run, police ask driver or witnesses to come forward

Keajin Markgraaff (21) was hit by a vehicle in Buys Street Westenburg this morning (Thursday).

POLOKWANE – The accident happened in front of the United Reformed Church of Southern Africa (URCSA) in Westenburg between 07:00 and 07:30.

Markgraaff was walking on the sidewalk heading in the direction of Ben Harris Street when he was hit by a bakkie from behind. After knocking him down, the driver drove off in the direction of Tomes Street.

It is suspected the bakkie’s bumper and left mirror was damaged as pieces of the debris was left at the scene.

There was a grey Toyota Fortuner driving behind the bakkie that hit Markgraaff and his family pleads with the occupants of the vehicle to come forward to assist with the investigation.

Markgraaff sustained several injuries and lost a lot of blood; he was rushed to hospital by a relative. The matter was reported to police but a case has not been opened yet as the victim needed immediate medical attention and could not take statements. They are, however, aware of the incident and are on the lookout for the driver and bakkie.

The family appeals to the community to come forward with information which could assist with the investigation. Anyone with information can contact Markgraaff’s uncle, Hendrik Markgraaff, at 073 149 1331 or they can visit the Westenburg Police Station if they have any information.
