Omari Monono drowned after he fell into a pit toilet at Moletji Diteteng near WF Knobel Hospital last Wednesday

POLOKWANE – On Friday the Democratic Alliance Women’s Network (Dawn) in Limpopo visited the Monono family with DAWN Provincial Chairperson, Desiree van der Walt, expressing condolences on behalf of the group.

She said the fact that people are still using pit toilets instead of flushing ones so long into the dawn of democracy will continue costing people their lives.

Van der Walt told CV there are still thousands of citizens who use pit toilets which is shocking, especially under the democratic government.

“Government should ensure the stands and toilets allocated to its people should be of dignifying status.

“As DAWN we are especially concerned about the vulnerable children and women in the province,” she said.

“Because the people have done the right thing for the ruling government, the government should also do right by its people.”

Omari’s uncle, Solly Monono, said his death has left the entire family and community shocked.

“It is painful to lose such a young child who we expected to have a bright future ahead of him.

“Like every family, we were hoping to help this young boy grow up into a responsible adult so he could take care of us in future,” Monono said.

DAWN promised to assist the family with the funeral arrangements for Omari.

Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt Genl Nneke Ledwaba, said he was deeply saddened by the tragedy and warned parents and guardians to be vigilant at all times to avoid these type of incidents from reoccurring.

Col Moatshe Ngoepe says the circumstances leading to the boy’s death are still being investigated by police in Seshego.
