In an effort to minimise unlawful activities, the Law Enforcement Unit of Polokwane Municipality clamped down on illegal activities on the streets of the Central Business District in a routine operation on Tuesday.
The operation focused on non-roadworthy vehicles, illegal street trading and repairing of vehicles on pavements. Non-roadworthy vehicles were taken to the municipal testing grounds where summonses were issued and the use of some vehicles were discontinued.
Goods of illegal hawkers were impounded and were only returned after a fine of R500 was paid, while vehicles that were repaired on pavements outside the premises of motor spare part dealers, were removed and taken to the municipal vehicle pound.

Traffic and Licensing Manager of Polokwane Municipality, Moshe Ramothwala, shows a summons issued for a non-roadworthy vehicle.

Traffic and Licensing Manager of the municipality, Moshe Ramothwala, led the operation and said that the municipality is on a mission to build a safe and smart city for all guests and residents through intensive operations. “We will ensure that motorists are safe on the roads across the city, address illegal trading and illegal mechanics through the enforcement of by-laws,” Ramothwala said and added that the municipality will continue to embark on such operations until the environment is conducive for all within the City of Stars.
On Monday, the law enforcement team also embarked on a routine operation which focused on the inspection of buildings belonging to the municipality that are leased. “The operation was aimed at checking that tenants of properties are complying with the terms and conditions of their lease agreements with the municipality. The ongoing operations are part of cleaning and restoring order through enforcement of by-laws,” Disree Manyane, Spokesperson of the municipality said.
