Join Univen youth and create a hunger-free environment

Seeing students and residents in rural communities suffer from hunger encouraged Matamela Nevhutshena to start the I Choose to Care organisation which aims to alleviate hunger.

LIMPOPO – Hailing from Tshidzivhe, Matamela is a B.Sc in food science and technology student at the University of Venda as well as the co-founder and chairperson of the organisation.

Even though he had been operating the organisation alone since 2016, this year he brought some other students on board to help him with the projects.

Matamela explained the organisation seeks to create a hunger-free life among students and the community which is why they seriously started to pursue these goals in May this year.

“The I Choose to Care organisation operates within the University of Venda where we focus only on students. The whole team decided to reach out to the rest of the community, however, where we target families who are struggle to provide for themselves, especially families with young children and children still in school,” he added.

The organisation also seeks to find sponsors that will be willing to provide them with money or groceries to help the less fortunate.

“I believe that together we can create a hunger-free environment among university students. This will in turn reduce crime among students as some of them might be forced to a life of crime by hunger. Let’s stand together to fight hunger.”

The I Choose to Care organisation is receiving a lot of support from students. “So far students have been playing a huge role in the organisation, with the majority of them donating grocery vouchers starting at R50 to assist those in need.”

Matamela added they are willing to work with other individuals, companies, foundations and organisations in order to have a wider database and help where they can such as at old age centres, disability centres and orphanages.
