Police save pangolin from fleeing smugglers

The pangolin was thrown from a moving vehicle, says the police

LIMPOPO – According to Police spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe, the police revived a tip-off about three men in a Polo Vivo attempting to sell a pangolin in Tonnel Plaza near the Oaks.

“Upon arriving at the scene the officers spotted the vehicle and attempted to stop it whereby the suspects sped off. A car chase ensued and subsequently one of the passengers threw the pangolin, which was in a box, from the moving vehicle. The officers stopped and managed to save the animal before they continued tracing the perpetrators,” he says.
The suspects get away vehicle was later found abandoned in the bushes at Ga-Mametja village and through intensified investigations, one suspect (36) was later arrested.

The susepct will appear before the Hoedspruit Periodical Court soon on a charge of possession of specially protected species.
