Be a volunteer this Mandela Month

What better way is there to get involved in the community this upcoming Mandela Month than to be part of the Vaaltyn Social and Economic Development Forum's volunteer programme to celebrate Nelson Mandela's legacy?

MOKOPANE – Sam Mokonyane, Chairperson of the forum, said: “As part of giving back to the community and to show the people in the community how important they are in society, we want to make them aware of the many challenges we face in our daily lives. As part of the ‘send me’ call made by the honourable former president of South Africa, our forum intends to launch a social campaign”.

He added as part of the campaign, they recruited 60 youths from the surrounding area who will be lending a hand during the campaign.

“We are looking for more people to join the campaign. We intend to go around the community during the whole of July to clean the streets and roads, motivating people, caring for the sick, asking for donations of things like sanitary towels, visit creches and pre-schools as well as local clinics.”

The intended programme is as follows:

• 1 July: launch of campaign. Event to be organised and culminating in distribution of refuse bags.

• 2 to 6 July: refuse collecting, street cleaning and refuse dumping.

• 7 to 8 July: fundraising for the ‘keep a girl child in class during menstruation’, collecting of sanitary towels.

• 9 to 13 July: refuse collection, grass and tree cutting and refuse dumping.

• 14 July: children festival and collecting sanitary towels.

• 15 July: fun walk, pre-Mandela Day events and sanitary towels collection.

• 16 to 20 July: refuse collection, graveyard cleaning, soup kitchen at a clinic, distribution of sanitary towels, reading to children in creches and home-based patients, cleaning and refuse dumping.

• 21 to 22 July: soccer tournament and sanitary towels collection.
