Police are hot on the heels of a man known by various names on social media who is allegedly part of a vehicle theft syndicate after he reportedly stole his newly met lover’s vehicle in Tzaneen last Sunday.
Provincial Police Spokesperson Moatshe Ngoepe indicated that the stolen vehicle, a green Toyota Tazz, was found at Artherstone Village at Acornhoek on the weekend. A similar vehicle, white in colour and reported stolen in Kempton Park recently, was recovered from the same premises.
This follows an incident last week when a woman who has been chatting with a man for approximately three months on social media agreed to meet with him. It is alleged that the victim from Mbekwana village outside Letsitele met the suspect through Facebook. He introduced himself as Brian Mabasa who works at a hospital in Mbombela. The two lovers spent the weekend together and visited a shopping centre in Tzaneen where the victim went to obtain items from a pharmacy leaving her lover behind in the vehicle. When she returned both the lover and the vehicle were nowhere to be found, according to Ngoepe.
He said the victim immediately reported the incident to the Police who started with initial investigations resulting in the recovery of the two vehicles on the weekend.
Ngoepe once again warned communities on the dangers of meeting people on social networks. He added that mostly women are targeted in similar ways subsequently becoming victims of crime.
Anyone with information can contact the investigating officer Jabulani Ngobeni on 082 451 7169 or report to the nearest Police station.
