For the Grade 3 learners of Pietersburg Comprehensive School (PCS) last Friday was a definite highlight as they had the opportunity to learn how to prepare their favourite food, pizza in a real fast food kitchen and under supervision of a real chef.
The group, as part of their Life Sciences curriculum, visited a local pizza outlet where they also learnt a lot about food safety, cooking skills and general hygiene.
Life Skills educator Anna Mphaho said the cooking skills acquired by the learners on the day will prepare them for the future. “We are trying to promote the lifetime skill of cooking starting from a young age. This is part of building a responsible society because the skills they learned will be helpful in future. They will be able to prepare their own meals and help their parents in the kitchen,” Mphaho said.
Outlet manager Caiphus Malebana said the lessons were part of the shops’ first birthday celebrations. “We opened the store last year and the Polokwane community welcomed us with open arms. Most of our clients are children and we decided to invite the learners from PCS to come and celebrate the day with us. Pizza is their favourite food and we saw it befitting to give them a opportunity to prepare it and also see what makes it tasty and delicious,” Malebana said.
Learner Rofhiwa Nelufule who helped the staff to prepare a large chicken and pineapple pizza said she will forever cherish the experience. “I have never cooked anything before because I am still young but I enjoyed preparing a pizza. I love the smell of the ingredients, the melting cheese and how it is packaged. I really enjoyed the experience,” remarked Rofhiwa.
