Members of the National Health, Education and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu) in the province picketed outside the Office of the Premier yesterday ( Wednesday) urging the him to intervene in their demands for performance bonuses allegedly owed to members employed by the Department of Health.
Nehawu Provincial Secretary Jacob Adams said that the Department of Health must immediately pay their members R164m in bonuses.
“We have been engaging the Department of Health on this particular matter for quite a long time and they are ignoring us. They are offering us R90m which is a shortfall of R74m. The R90m was decided upon unilaterally, without engaging us. What is bothering us is that the Provincial Government recently returned R1 billion to the Provincial Treasury which could have been used to solve the situation,” Adams said. “Last week we protested at the Department of Health’s headquarters, so we decided to protest here at the Office of the Premier today to put pressure on him so that he can expedite our demands.”
