GIYANI: Two killed, three seriously injured as suspect goes on shooting spree

Police in Giyani have launched a massive manhunt for an unknown suspect.

LIMPOPO – According to police spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe , the shooting took place at a local tavern in the Muxiyana village, outside Giyani in the early hours of Sunday morning, 17 June.

It is alleged that the suspect and the owner of the tavern got into an argument when the suspect began randomly shooting at patrons.

“The customers in the tavern took cover but after the dust had settled, five men between the ages of 20 and 40-years-old, were found on the floor with gunshots wounds. Two died instantly and three were taken to hospital with serious injuries,” he explained.

Ngoepe says the names of the deceased will be released as soon as their families have been notified.

He added that no arrests have been made as the suspect is still unknown.

“Anyone with information which can lead to the arrest of the suspect may contact Colonel Chris Mabasa at 082 469 0739; the crime stop number 0860010111; the crime line sms 32211 or the nearest police station,” he concluded.

Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Jan Scheepers was deeply saddened by this incident and has condemned it in the most strongest possible terms.

The General has further warned communities, including liquor outlet owners to ensure that patrons are not carrying dangerous weapons including firearms into their establishments.

“Should they notice this practice, they must report to their nearest police station immediately to prevent these types of incidents from happening,” he concluded.
