A traffic officer attached to the Polokwane Municipality, Costa Masoga (42) is expected to appear in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court today (Thursday) facing a charge of attempted murder after an alleged shooting spree in Greenside during which a 17-year-old girl was injured last Wednesday.
Masoga appeared in court on Friday and the case was postponed to today pending further investigations. Masoga was remanded in custody.
Provincial Police Spokesperson Moathe Ngoepe indicated that Westenburg Police had arrested a 42-year-old suspect after a reported incident that occurred around 12:30.
The suspect allegedly insulted the victims aged 13, 15 and 17 years respectively where he would have encountered them in the street and an exchange of words apparently ensued. He allegedly chased them with his vehicle and fired several shots in their direction. The Police and Emergency Medical Services were summoned and immediately responded leading to the apprehension of the suspect and the confiscation of his private firearm.
The wounded victim who was taken to hospital has since been discharged and is, according to Ngoepe, recuperating at home.
